Sadie Hawthorne is a 14 yr. old high school student and an aspiring naturalist who loves to study and observe animals and their behavior in their natural environment. Her desire to study and observe is not limited to animals as she attempts to analyze human beings the same way. Sadie soon discovers that this is difficult because behaviorally, we are all unpredictable.

McDonald focused on acting, landing a job in the series, System Crash, in 1999. McDonald found a niche as a voice-over actress, after she was cast in 2001 in John Kricfalusi's The Ripping Friends. She has done a total of 39 voice-over jobs. In 2000, she was cast as Emma Nelson in Degrassi: The Next Generation, a spin-off of the successful Degrassi series. In 2004, she played Dawn Gensler in the made-for-television movie She's Too Young. She also had a guest role on the Canadian Family show Naturally, Sadie as Heidi. In 2008, she played Danielle “Daisy” Brooks in the made-for-television erotic-thriller movie, Poison Ivy: The Secret Society. In 2013, she got two roles in the popular Canadian TV-show Lost Girl and also made an appearance in Orphan Black. In 2018, McDonald was part of Drake's music video for I'm Upset, which took place during a Degrassi reunion.
